kind of obvious isnt it
we are ALL the same in that noone should be denied the right to choose who they want to be with, if we deny someone that right there is no hope for a more equal future, lets just be human here.
no doubt

The First Amendment states that “”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” – meaning that “”government should not prefer one religion to another, or religion to irreligion.” (Justice David Souter, 1994)

Good sire, I have no idea if I should slap you in the face, or applaud you while laughing.
I’ll probably do both.

I’m sorry, but I think you missed the point. The whole point of the debate was NOT to change the Church’s viewpoint (or “rules”) on this issue – she even explicitly stated that.
Her point was that the STATE has no right to deny the right of marriage to non-heterosexuals as it does not have the right to determine if two people are fit to marry each other.

I don’t understand how people can’t understand the separation of church and state? Marriage is a religious institution, it shouldn’t be an institution of the state unless it’s available to everyone. =/

Diane Savino for President! Thanks Diane!

Thank you Senator Savino! I wish there were more Assembly members and Senators like YOU! So many of them are afraid to speak up and speak the TRUTH, but you did… so effortlessly in fact that it made me want to cry. Thank you again for your efforts. They will not be forgotten.

Wow! This was great. It is very heartening that someone else has been able to articulate my thoughts on the matter so much more eloquently than I could! You go Senator Savino!

To “utga41″ – What sort of legal argument would satisfy you? She’s arguing that we should *change the law*, because it’s unjust. She’s a legislator, not a judge.
And humbug to your “law cannot bend to individual whim.” The partnerships of gay couples are not whims. Who looks down his nose and says, “law cannot bend to individual whim” to someone claiming that the law wrongs them? That’s no argument at all.

The “abuse of marriage” she talked about – and that both religious and secular people should care about – will not get worse by allowing gay couples to marry. Even in marriage goals that everyone agrees on – creating a loving, nurturing, stable union and family – many, many gay couples are already doing better than many of those currently allowed to marry. My mom and her partner are two of them.

great speak!!! vaild points and an amzing woman more should have her mindset!!

She didn’t say anything critical about the rules of the Catholic church. She just stated a fact – that the church has the right to withhold the sacrament of marriage if it considers the partners unfit. Given her criticisms of the abuse of marriage, she might actually think that selectivity by religious institutions is a good thing.
Regardless, her only point was that religious institutions have maximal freedom in deciding whether to perform a marriage. They won’t lose that when gays can marry.

Lol seriously kaminleft…even though your view is pretty screwed up…at least you don’t think it’s a choice…? Lol I have no idea how to feel about that comment.

This is wonderful. I love the points about game shows like The Bachelor –
“We’re giving away husbands on a gameshow! You can watch The Bachelor! Where 30 desperate women will compete to marry a 40 year old man, who has never been able to maintain a decent relationship in his life.”
She’s right. It’s crazy that gay marriage isn’t already legal. I feel like we’re so many years behind…I just don’t understand how any government action can be determined by religious beliefs.

Why? becasue it is accurate? Too real for you? Not based on your so called “moral values”?
December 12th, 2009 at 5:31 am
Wonderfully voiced support. Thank you, thank you Lady Di.
